Journey to Novarupta

Novarupta

The most powerful eruption of the 20th century.

The explorer who led 4 expeditions in the early 1900’s.

The book that told about their journeys into the hostile wilderness.

And the modern-day creation scientist who rediscovered that book, and picked up where National Geographic left off.

Powerful evidence for the worldwide flood, and Biblical history.

It all comes together in one story of a volcano thirty times larger than Mount St. Helens!

A video documentary from Genesis Apologetics in partnership with DIVE Interactive Education and Creation Quest.

This full-length documentary tells the stories of the Novarupta eruption, Dr. Griggs’ National Geographic expeditions, and the journeys into the blast zone by Dr. David Shormann and his team. This amazing adventure shows the evidence for a worldwide flood, and showcases geology that points to the historical record of the Bible.

Production Updates

Movie Debut

July 16, 2023

The first audience to see the complete movie gathers at the Mount St Helens Creation Center in Castle Rock, WA.

The Project is Finished!

June 16, 2023

Today we want to give thanks, and gratitude to the Lord! It was over 10 years ago that a group of homeschool families (then called the CreationWorks Media Team) began working on a documentary called, Journey to Novarupta. After a decade of lost -- and recovered rights, pauses in the project, and bumps in the road, that movie is finished as of today!

Thank you to Dr. David Shormann who entrusted us to tell the stories of his team’s amazing adventures to a remote volcano! Thank you to Harold Tarter, the biggest cheerleader of the project, and to Dr. Dan Biddle of Genesis Apologetics for funding the project, and to all the people who gave their time, talents, and effort over the last 10 years to make this day possible!

Now our prayer is that thousand (hundreds of thousands?) will hear the faith-building stories and evidence that is in harmony with the Biblical record from the largest volcanic eruption in modern times!

The Calm Before the Storm

Our animator, John Rogers, has released another screenshot from the animations he's making for our new documentary, Journey to Novarupta!

This is Mount Katmai just before one of the largest volcanic eruptions in modern times is just about to happen!

This documentary will present evidence for the Worldwide Flood, and the Biblical timeline of history found in the rock record -- all while telling some amazing stories of adventure!

Jesse Hosteler Joins Team

January 12, 2023

Jesse is making over 35 amazing animations for Journey to Novarupta. They will include maps, explanations of radioisotope dating, turbidity currents, pyroclastic flows, and so much more. His work will make the story, and the science behind it, come alive in a powerful way.

Over the years, Jesse has gained valuable experience as an artist doing what he loves! He has been a graphic designer, a freelance artist, and a corporate animator. We’re so glad to have him as part of our team.

You can check out more of Jesse’s work at JessieHostetler.com

Screen Shots from One of Our Animators

January 10, 2023

One of our animators, John Rogers, is creating amazing animations depicting the eruption of Mount Katmai and Novarupta. To our knowledge, these beautiful animations are the first to show the events of this amazing eruption. Combined with cinematic music and exciting narration, these animations are going to add a whole new dimension to our documentary.

Top

June 6th, 1912 - Mount Katmai begins to erupt, and then collapse in on itself, as magma flows out into the valley behind it.

Middle

Not long after the collapse of Mount Katmai, the volcanic tubes under the surface backed-up. The huge pressure shot out of the ground six miles away, producing a new volcanic vent called, Novarupta. It’s pictured here at night. A river of superheated gases, ash, and volcanic material flowed from Novarupta, instantly killing all life for over 50 square miles, and flattening the valley into a wide plain.

Bottom

Volcanic deposits averaged 656 feet thick in some places. Not long after the eruption, this valley would be dotted with hundreds and hundreds of fumeroles (volcanic vents). It would later become know as The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.

Honoring Brett

January 5, 2023

During the making of Journey to Novarupta, one of our team members passed away. Pictured is Pat Roy doing an interview for a tribute to Brett Salsbury, who gave his all for the production.

Originally Novarupta was a project that was given to us in order to not only teach kids about creation, but also show them how to use media for God’s glory. Brett was committed to telling the account of creation — and equipping young people to share the message of Salvation. He was passionate about the production of Journey to Novarupta.

Our bonus feature will share some of the “behind the scenes” stories about Brett, and his love for equipping the next generation to share the message of the Creator.
